Movie: Shark Night 3D

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Rating: ★★★☆☆

So after the horrible Piranha 3D we now have another fish/teen movie combo, also in 3D, so be sure there's gonna be a fish jumping out at you from the screen. I’d want my money back normally, especially since Piranha was one of the worst movies of last year, but this time it’s not all that bad. Sharks aren’t in the movies all too often, and since Jaws there wasn’t really a good shark movie, unless I’ve been living under a rock or something. This is by no means dethroning Jaws from it’s rightful place – make no mistake about it. It’s not the king of fish movies, just a mix of a prince and a jester, but he does his job right.

I’m not talking about the 3d of course, because frankly I don’t think a good movie needs these effects at all (think “Insidious”), but aside from that there are some pretty good scenes here and some wild ones as well. It’s also VERY predictable, to the point that you can guess easily who and when will die, and you can guess the plot twists a lot faster, than the plot is trying to explain it. But movies like this are not for the twists and plot and good acting. Movies like this are about sharks violently devouring kids. By the way – why is it usually teenage/college kids? I’d love to see a shark movie at a retirement home, with old people fighting for survival. Apparently I’m the only one, so we get some “sort-of-hot” girls (they’re not THAT hot, trust me) and plenty of “accidental” camera pans towards their asses. If that’s what you need to sell a movie fine by me, but it won’t be a cult classic – sorry.

This is actually a job well done for a shark film in a genre (fish horror?) that is strongly underpopulated at all. If you’re not satisfied don’t worry – knowing the holywood producers talents we’ll soon see a 3d horror about murderous plankton or amoebas! God, am I the only one waiting for “The Thing” remake?

Movie: Repo Men

Rating: ★★★☆☆
Repo men is somewhere between a rip-off from Repo – the genetic opera, and an original piece of hollywood production. Sure there are MANY similarities, but there are still enough differences to distinguish the two. For starters this is NOT a musical. The first REPO wasn’t bad but two musicals about organ repossession would be waaaay too many. Nah this is a pretty standard sci-fi thriller with some gore and pretentious-philosophical underline that’s more funny than thought engaging. Still as an action packed thriller it does very well, and both Jude Law and Forest Whitaker deliver a convincing performance.

There are no scary parts here, but it’s nice visually and worth a watch, even for the sake of comparing it to it’s predecessor. And who knows, maybe a few years from now we’ll all have bar codes on our organs and liver mortgage plan. So yeah maybe it tells us something about the dangers of skyrocketing healthcare costs, or something. After all it’s hollywood so it has to have a meaning right? The action is there, the blood is there and a couple of well known actors to top it all off. What more to ask for if you’re in a mood for some pretty entertaining action? But i’d still recommend watching the first REPO movie before this one. After all it’s not a new idea.

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

Ok, this could’ve been a “close to true story” kinda remake thriller thing. It could’ve been good because those stories that you know, look kinda real are always quite scary. But this movie failed on so many levels I don’t even know where to start. First of all – there’s completely no atmosphere and no sense anywhere, two girls on a bike trip in Argentina get separated and one gets kidnapped. So the other starts her search and blah blah blah. Boooring. Actually the only action is near the end of the movie and it’s not any good. Sorry. Most of the time we see scenes that are supposed to make the characters look real to us, but all they do is inspire us to have a contest of who can produce a biggest yawn. The acting is not bad, but the story is so boring we actually ended up wishing both girls to get kidnapped just to get it over with. This movie is a thriller with no thrills. Skip it.

The dvd box was pretty straightforward : a woman is trapped in her office parking lot on christmass, when everyone else left, and there’s a psycho trying to catch her. So I knew what to expect from the start. And guess what. They didn’t lie. This is exactly what this movie is about. In fact, the description is so exact, there’s really not much else going on there. No real plot twists, no unpredictable moments, this just goes from point A to point B with a couple of interesting scenes in between. The good thing is the fact they only needed a parking lot (well mostly) so it was pretty easy to build atmosphere. A dark lot, some cars left, some elevators, emergency stairs. And of course even though the building is new and modern there are some flickering lights.
Doesn’t it annoy you that in real life you see those flickering lights maybe once or twice, and they’re there in every movie ? That’s a cliche tension builder right there.

The acting? I’d say it’s good enough, not great but this is not a movie you’d remember anyway. Good enough pretty much says it all. The story – well being locked out someplace with a psycho on your trail is not really anything new, but at least the parking lot is new, right? Next we’re gonna see a lady who got locked out at a carnival with a crazy carousel technician out to get her. Or stuff like that.

But anyway, it’s a nice flick to watch with friends, have a few laughs here and there, and jump on your seats once or twice because of some sudden noises. What more to ask? If you’re looking for a horror classic / masterpiece this is definitely not it. But if you’re looking for a fun movie, I think it is just that.

I really like Bill Moseley. I mean he’s “that horror dude” right? Well if you like him too you’d be disappointed because he’s not really onscreen much. Nah, instead we get a mix of “Saw” psychopath with a “deep” voice, bombs, paranoia and childhood traumas. All of that combined into a movie that’s actually not bad. But not perfect either. And somewhere halfway through we can actually guess what’s going to happen and how it’s all gonna end. Still there are some nice locations and sometimes, only sometimes it really has a nice atmosphere. Not scary, because it’s not a typical horror movie by any means. It’s more of a thriller with a little bit of supernatural, but with movies like that, which aren’t good or bad the main question is – will I manage to sit through it, enjoy it and not skip forward / play a game on my phone during it?

The answer is yes. And that’s not bad I guess. The acting here is OK, but there are some moments that are pretty terrible too. The atmosphere is there, some mystery, nice locations, Bill Moseley. Yeah, I think it’s “good enough” to watch. Oh and don’t get fooled by the ad’s this movie is not really about faith or religion (or the devil). The fact that the main character is attending a seminary doesn’t make the movie about religion. Come on.

Movie : Blood Creek (2009)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

What do we have here? An old ritual, runestones, undead-nazi’s and to brothers, one of which was held hostage (you can say : held prisoner) and the other has to help him with the situation. So this is sort of prison break all over again, since the imprisoned guy is exactly the same. And he still acts exactly the same, so it’s actually easy to confuse the movie with the tv series. Really? No. But still acting is not the strongest point of this movie. Neither is the plot which is actually pretty stupid. I mean, come on, nazi immortal/undead soldiers in the US, trying to get a third eye, rune marks ? It’s like a mix of all and everything that’s cliche in horror coming back at us again.

Sure there are some nice locations, but as soon as the “bad guy” shows himself on screen it’s nothing but laughter. Seriously he doesn’t need to have an ugly / evil face to be truly evil. It’s the acting that should define him as such. And that “mask” just looks silly. All in all, this is a movie that just didn’t work. As a horror it turns out to be a comedy. As a comedy it turns out to be a “not-so-good” one. Watch it if you’re really bored.
