Movie : Martyrs

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Ok, let’s make it all clear. I hate disgusting horror movies like Hostel and Frontieres. I seriously think that movies need a lot more to be really scary than eyeballs popping out in a realistic way. Those movies are not even horror to me, they’re a way for us to see how sick can we be without looking away. Or whatever. You get my point.

Martyrs is different. It still has an amount of disturbing images, and I mean REALLY disturbing, way more than any Hostel movie ever managed – but at the same time it tries to have a story, a meaning of some sort. It tries to ask questions. And even though the story is not the most clever thing ever written, for some reason this movie got stuck in my head. It’s EXTREMELY disturbing. VERY disgusting. Definitely not a movie for everyone.

And normally I’d give it 1 star and tell you to stay away. But this time it all sort of fits together. It’s not senseless violence for the sake of blood and gore. This movie isn’t even scary. At all. It asks some questions, mostly about afterlife. It tries to be smart.

I think it doesn’t really “win” in it’s category. It’s not a great movie. But it’s so different from everything else, that if you can stand “disgusting images” then you should give it a try. But if hostel was too violent for you, you better stay away.

Rating: ★★½☆☆

I really like Bill Moseley. I mean he’s “that horror dude” right? Well if you like him too you’d be disappointed because he’s not really onscreen much. Nah, instead we get a mix of “Saw” psychopath with a “deep” voice, bombs, paranoia and childhood traumas. All of that combined into a movie that’s actually not bad. But not perfect either. And somewhere halfway through we can actually guess what’s going to happen and how it’s all gonna end. Still there are some nice locations and sometimes, only sometimes it really has a nice atmosphere. Not scary, because it’s not a typical horror movie by any means. It’s more of a thriller with a little bit of supernatural, but with movies like that, which aren’t good or bad the main question is – will I manage to sit through it, enjoy it and not skip forward / play a game on my phone during it?

The answer is yes. And that’s not bad I guess. The acting here is OK, but there are some moments that are pretty terrible too. The atmosphere is there, some mystery, nice locations, Bill Moseley. Yeah, I think it’s “good enough” to watch. Oh and don’t get fooled by the ad’s this movie is not really about faith or religion (or the devil). The fact that the main character is attending a seminary doesn’t make the movie about religion. Come on.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I had some trouble rating this movie. Mostly because it’s actually a pretty solid thing, a good idea, an original script (written by the director among other people), and it’s nice visually. Also it has really good acting from the two main characters. Especially Liam Neeson – the guy still has it. So why isn’t it one of those “4 star and up” movies?

The movie revolves around Anna, a girl who supposedly died in car acciddent. Supposedly? Well yeah, because she lands in the morgue, where the creepy mortitian prepares her for her last journey. Yeah – he apparently can see the dead and see them “walk and talk”. So she’s walking, talking, feeling pretty alive, yet everyone thinks she’s dead. And Elliot, the mortitian, does seem a bit odd sometimes, so we don’t really know if she’s dead and he’s crazy, or if she’s alive and he’s crazy and a psychopath. And the whole argument whether she’s alive or dead seems to occupy most of the forum talk about this movie, eclipsing the fact if it’s any good or not.

The whole idea about death and whether we really are dead or just dead-inside, but living is a nice thing to explore. Yeah. But there’s also a riddle in here, and like most riddles it has some parts of the plot suggesting one answer, while other parts suggest another. The problem with it is that sometimes these things contradict each other. Thus making it seem like they’re added “for the sake of mystery” and can get quite annoying. Also the actor that plays the “boyfriend” – ehhh, there’s something about him that every time he’s on screen you’d like to fastforward. Great music, good atmosphere and a clever idea will amount to a solid 3/5. And I’m curious to see another movie from the same team of people. They got the writing good, and since it’s a debut we can only hope it’ll be even better next time.

Movie : Case 39

Rating: ★★½☆☆

There’s something about little girls and boys that’s scary. Nah, not the thought that it’s mine and I’d have to pay alimony. Basically we tend to think children are not too smart, weak and dependant. And when we see manipulative and extremely smart little kids we get scared. Especially with black hair, black eyes and OH-SO-NICE-SMILES. But enough about that. This is a movie that started out very well, and then took a turn for the worse, to go back to being “ok” again, and then back to being bad. Which sort of makes it a 2.5, right ?

A social worker takes up a case of a little girl that seems to have some “house trouble”. The typical, you know, like “my parents want to kill me” kinda thing. I’m sure we all had that. But Renee Zellwegger’s character is sissy enough to think it’s a big deal, so she rushes in and takes the kid away from those awful, abusive parents. Well needless to say, it turns pretty bad for her and everyone around, because this time actually the “evil” parents were good, and the “abused” child was “evil”.

There’s not really a lot of typical horror’y atmosphere, as it tries to be psychological and deeper sometimes. But there’s nice suspense without resorting to constantly jumping-out-of-the-dark-with-a-loud-noise cliche. Overall it’s a good watch, can get scary sometimes because of it’s context (there’s one conversation with the little girl which is especially well acted by her, you’ll know when you see it). It’s scary in a different way, but still pretty scary. Not amazing, but good enough.
